SATURDAY POETRY SERIES PRESENTS: YEHUDA AMICHAI

A PITY. WE WERE SUCH A GOOD INVENTION

by Yehuda Amichai

They amputated
your thighs off my hips.
As far as I’m concerned
they are all surgeons. All of them.

They dismantled us
each from the other.
As far as I’m concerned
they are all engineers. All of them.

A pity. We were such a good
and loving invention.
An aeroplane made from a man and wife.
Wings and everything.
We hovered a little above the earth.

We even flew a little.

Yehuda Amichai (1924-2000) was born in Wurzburg, Germany, in 1924 and emigrated with his family to Palestine in 1936. During his lifetime he published eleven volumes of poetry in Hebrew, two novels, and a book of short stories. In 1982 he received the Israel Prize of Poetry, his country’s highest honor. He is considered by many to be Israel’s greatest modern poet.

Editor’s Note: Amichai utilizes short, accessible language to tell universal stories of love, as evidenced in his timeless collection, Love Poems, while his passion for his adoptive homeland of Israel is well-documented in his work, Poems of Jerusalem. For me there is something heartbreakingly genius in the sincere depth and ubiquitous yet personal narrative inherent in Amichai’s poetry. His are poems you can read again and again, memorize, and which you carry with you.

Yes! We even flew a little! Something of a suite to be said for an affirmation of life and love!
